Sin Eater 3. Hello
~
You see them girls up there Bacha? (बच्चा)
'Kid,' that's what he calls me, I doubt he remembers all our names.
"Yes, father."
He didn't turn around to look at me, instead his gaze stayed riveted on the
living scene above, fascinated by the cloud of flies and the pack of monkeys
and their curious lust, the way they curled their tail, tickling the spoiling faces.
"Them be bad womens, Bacha."
"Sold by bad parents into that house, to Muslims! just to get some dirty coins!"
"Nevermind how perty they be."
It was strange that he punctuated that last bit with a suppressed snicker.
His voice was high pitched, Sage like, drunk and amused.
"That pretty one was supposed to be yours." "Now she's the monkeys"
My eyes drew wide, disbelieving his words, my vision flew like twin arrows-
And rested on the blue girl's cheeks, her downcast eyes, and small painted lips-
And instantly, what had only itched me from afar became something else- become mine
Then gone. There was only the gnawing of the monkeys.
He turned to me, like a proud guide "Your papa was looking out for ya, Bacha."
"If its not for those parents of theirs." We watched their sweet faces besieged by Manure flies
He sighed, but when he looked up it was like he was swelling with a fine justice.
For a moment, the girls' scent came to us, soiled, but coyly sweet, sharp perfume and refuse.
Then, lazily he pointed up his leathery finger at the blue-green swarm, his eyes wet with life.
"Better look your fill before the monkeys took a shine to her, Bacha."
